First Visit

Dr. Townsend with a patient

This appointment should be fun and exciting giving us a chance to build trust and understanding with your child. Dr. Mike will spend as much time as it takes to ensure a happy visit and develop the most appropriate treatment plan for your child. These appointments are important to:

  • Introduce your child to the dentist and ease anxiety for future dental visits.
  • Review preventive concepts which include diet and oral home care.
  • Evaluate growth and development of your child’s smile.
  • Identify cavities or those at high-risk for cavities early.

Dr. Mike and his team want to make every visit special and successful. Picking the right time of the day for your child can be important for the success of the appointment even though it may not appear to be the most convenient time for the parents. The dental team will work with you to find that “perfect time slot” to create that perfect appointment.

It is our experience that preschool aged children are often “fresher” in the morning making the dental experience better. Children requiring a lot of dental treatment should also be seen in the morning for the same reason.

Due to the fact dental appointments are reserved exclusively for each patient, please notify our office immediately in you are unable to make your scheduled appointment so that we can offer your time to another patient who needs dental care too. We know life can be unpredictable at times and we appreciate your help and understanding.

Frequently Asked Questions:

How can I prepare my child for their 1st dental visit?

It is normal for children to be anxious about their first visit to the dentist. Dr. Mike and his staff have special training in helping make children more comfortable during their appointment. Sometimes parents can make their child more anxious by trying to prepare them too much. Let us do the work and we’ll let you relax.

Can I schedule several children at the same time?

Absolutely. We love treating siblings at the same time and this can often make the appointments easier and faster for everyone. When it comes to restorative appointments it may be best to schedule appointments on different days or times so that you can focus on one child at a time.

What should I bring to my first visit?

Please bring your insurance information. If you have the opportunity, please review and complete the first visit forms. This will allow you more time to talk with the staff and enjoy our beautiful office and minimize any delays with your appointment.

What will happen on the first visit?

During the first visit, Dr. Mike and his staff will take the time to build a trusting relationship with your child and introduce him/her to all our "fun instruments and toys" before completing the exam and cleaning.
